Ethnic Textiles for the Folk Bohemian in me

One of my favorite things to do is take a beautiful but forgotten piece of furniture and redesign it for a modern space. This can require a new color palette in paints and textiles, a new finish, a complete tear down and rebuild, or just some TLC. Each vintage lovely I purchase is special and unique so there is no formula for it — I just reimagine it how I would love it for myself. Due to this process being personal to my aesthetic, you may have noticed I use a lot of vintage hand crafted fabrics – ethnic textiles such as Suzanis, Indigos, Shibori, Mudcloth, Otomi, Kilim, etc. I am a sucker for the texture these folk fabrics provide to my redesigns. I have collected textiles for years and have many awaiting their perfect fit.

When I found this Mid Century Modern daybed / convertible lounge chaise, I knew exactly which piece to use: a prized tribal African Mudcloth that once served as a poncho. These fabrics are ingrained with character, entirely handmade, hand dyed, and so perfectly imperfect in every way.

Without further adieu, here it is – my latest! I love how it turned out and am excited to rehome it. Currently we are keeping it in our showroom at 182 Glenridge Ave in Montclair.
